Practical guidance

A complete favicon set without unnecessary clutter

Modern browsers can use SVG, while older environments still benefit from ICO. Apple devices and installable web apps require dedicated PNG sizes.

01

Why multiple formats?

SVG stays sharp at any size, ICO covers legacy browser behaviour, and PNG files serve fixed-size platform requirements.

02

What is maskable?

A maskable icon includes extra safe space so Android and other platforms can crop it into circles, squircles or custom shapes.

03

Transparent or solid?

Transparent works well for favicons. A solid background is usually safer for app icons when the artwork does not fill the canvas.

FAQ

Common favicon questions

Do I still need favicon.ico?

It is not essential for every modern browser, but it remains a useful compatibility fallback and is inexpensive to include.

Why generate both regular and maskable 512 px icons?

A regular icon preserves the intended full composition. A maskable icon adds safe padding for platforms that crop icons into different shapes.

Can I use a rectangular source image?

Yes. The generator fits it inside a square canvas without distortion. A square source with generous margins usually gives the best result.

Does MetaTag upload my image?

No. Reading, resizing, rendering and packaging are performed locally by JavaScript in your browser.
