About the project

Metadata should not be complicated.

MetaTag is a lightweight browser-based tool for generating, previewing and auditing the metadata that helps websites communicate with search engines, social platforms and browsers.

Why MetaTag exists

Modern website metadata extends far beyond a page title and a short description. A complete implementation may include canonical URLs, robots directives, Open Graph properties, social card data, browser appearance settings and structured data.

These technologies are documented across different standards, platforms and developer resources. Small mistakes are easy to make: duplicated tags, missing values, incorrect properties, unsuitable image data or structured information that does not match the visible page.

MetaTag brings these tasks together in one focused interface. It is designed to make metadata easier to understand, assemble, review and copy without turning a relatively simple job into a complicated workflow.

What MetaTag does

MetaTag combines several related metadata tools in a single application.

SEO metadata

Create page titles, descriptions and other essential metadata used by search engines and browsers.

Open Graph

Generate metadata for richer link previews across compatible social networks and messaging platforms.

X Cards

Prepare card metadata for links shared on X and compatible services.

Canonical and robots

Define preferred page URLs and provide clear indexing instructions for search crawlers.

Browser appearance

Configure theme colors and related metadata used by supported browsers and operating systems.

JSON-LD

Build structured data that describes the page and its content in a machine-readable format.

Metadata auditing

Import existing markup, inspect detected metadata and identify fields that may need attention.

Ready-to-use code

Copy clean generated markup and integrate it into your website without unnecessary dependencies.

Local by design

The information entered into MetaTag is processed directly in your browser. Page titles, descriptions, imported HTML, URLs, structured data and generated markup do not need to be uploaded to an application server for the generator to work.

Local processing makes the tool faster, reduces unnecessary data handling and allows MetaTag to work without user accounts.

No registration Open the tool and begin working.
No server-side drafts Your generator content stays in your browser.
No subscriptions The generator is available without a paid plan.
No unnecessary complexity The interface stays focused on metadata.

More information about local storage and technical hosting requests is available in the Privacy Policy.

Built around web standards

MetaTag follows published specifications and platform documentation wherever practical. Its features are based on established web technologies such as HTML metadata, Open Graph, Schema.org structured data and modern browser appearance metadata.

Standards and platform behaviour can change over time. Search engines, social platforms and browsers may also interpret the same markup differently. For that reason, MetaTag is a development aid, not a substitute for testing the final published page.

Generated markup should always be reviewed to ensure that it accurately describes the visible content of the website.

Who it is for

MetaTag is intended for anyone who needs to prepare or inspect website metadata, including:

  • developers building new pages or applications;
  • designers preparing websites for launch;
  • website owners improving existing pages;
  • SEO specialists reviewing technical metadata;
  • content creators checking how shared links may appear;
  • students learning how metadata works.

No specialist account, browser extension or development environment is required. MetaTag runs as a normal web application.

Created by Mark Digital

MetaTag is an independent project created by Mark Digital.

Crafting lightweight, privacy-focused digital tools with precise code and zero bloat.

Mark Digital develops focused web tools and browser products designed to solve practical problems without unnecessary tracking, heavy frameworks or artificial barriers.

Each project is allowed to develop its own visual character and workflow. What connects them is not an identical interface, but a shared emphasis on usefulness, clarity, privacy and careful implementation.

Ongoing development

MetaTag is an actively maintained project. Future improvements may include support for additional metadata formats, stronger auditing, more previews and better import and export tools.

Useful feedback is welcome. Bug reports, feature suggestions and examples of confusing metadata behaviour can be submitted through the Contact page.
